Background

Who is this for?

These illustrations were made for international clients who were trying to launch their NFT collectibles projects. As an illustrator, I was outsourced by a creative design studio called UNTAI Studio based in Surabaya, East Java. I worked alongside other illustrators and project managers to deliver illustrations that satisfy client's expectations. Clients contacted us through the freelancing platform Fiverr.

I am tasked with...

Creating memorable and attractive character designs, and designing additional attributes that could be combined to produce thousands of unique combinations.

Every NFT collectible project always starts with a brief from the client. How they want the character to look, what the attributes (accessories) are, how many attributes there are. My project managers act as a bridge between me and the client. After reading the brief, I get a move on and start gathering references. For example, above are my moodboards when I was in the sketching stage of Royal Penguins' base character art.

Penguin process

After which I would make some rough sketches. If the client gives a sketch a pass, it's off to the line art stage and coloring stage. Once the main character art is completed, I'd have to finish the rest of the attributes' illustrations.

Penguin stages

The type and number of attributes usually vary depending on the project, but on average I would usually make from 100-150 attributes ranging from things like skin color, eye color, hair color, to accessories like headwears, clothing, weapons, among others.

Completed assets or illustrations are kept track of through collaborative Excel sheets. Usually,  projects that require 100-150 attributes could set me back 3 to 4 weeks depending on the complexity. Once all assets are finished, they would be mixed and matched to create up to 10.000 unique combinations.

Here are some combinations generated after all the assets were finished being drawn. These are from the Ruthless Dolphins collection, Royal Penguins collection, Japanese Goblin collection, and original character design commissions that didn't make it to the collectible phase.
