Background

What's the problem?

As MV Homebake is a business made from the ground up, it didn't have its own dedicated graphic designer at that time. For the 2021 Christmas season, MV Homebake wanted the box to look decorative, cheery, and festive to match the spirit.

Since the target market is dominated by housewives, MV Homebake needs its seasonal Christmas edition packaging to include illustrations that look grand and appealing to attract potential customers.

Therefore...

I need to design an illustrated packaging box for MV Homebake's Christmas hampers that evokes an image of winter festivities and everything Christmas.

Workflow

Design Process

I started out the process by analyzing the client's gathered references and style of illustration and making a moodboard. After that, I move on to the sketching stage and came up with my first composition.

MV Sketch 1

The first iteration of the box's cover side forms a star silhouette out of Christmas and winter elements like decorative lights, plants and branches, trees, a reindeer, presents, among others. However, this design didn't really sit well with the client and they preferred to take out the star shaped negative space.

MV Sketch 2

This is the second iteration of the cover side. The elements have been rearranged to instead clutter around generally, and the mistletoe has been moved to the center of the composition as per the request of the client. The client gave me a pass for this iteration and I was free to move to the next stage.

MV Sketch 3

This is the cover design after it's been inked. Rough illustrations have been refined to look cleaner.

MV Finish

And here's the iteration colored. I used a lot of pastel reds, teals, and yellows as main colors to contrast the navy background other than whites. The client was happy with the results and the next step was to apply the finished design into the packaging template, add some final touches, and we're good to go.
